New York Times Reports on Mercersburg's Endowment
On Saturday, January 26, 2008, the New York Times reported on the growing endowments enjoyed by independent schools nationwide. Mercersburg's endowment is 16th among prep schools and surpassed the $200 million mark in fall 2007.
Quality of academic program, exceptional facilities, and financial aid top the priority lists of many of the wealthiest schools, including Mercersburg. More than 40 percent of Mercersburg students receive aid.
"Whatever the motivation to spread the wealth," wrote Times reporter Geraldine Fabrikant, "boarding schools are leading the way. Last year, 40.9 percent of all boarding school students got some financial aid, compared with 22.5 percent in 2000, according to the National Association of Independent Schools."
