Miller Named Head Men's Basketball Coach at UNC Greensboro
12/21/2011
Former Mercersburg basketball player Wes Miller '01 became the youngest current head coach in NCAA Division I men's basketball December 14. The 28-year-old Miller, who played one season at Mercersburg before transferring to New Hampton Prep in New Hampshire, is serving as interim head coach at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.
Miller was just 10 games into his first season as an assistant coach at UNCG when Mike Dement resigned as the Spartans' head coach and Miller was put in charge of the team, which began the year 2-8 before the coaching change. Miller played collegiately at North Carolina under Roy Williams and had served as an assistant coach at two other Division I schools in North Carolina (Elon and High Point) before coming to UNCG last summer.
His second game as a head coach came in legendary Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, North Carolina, and Miller's troops led No. 5-ranked Duke for much of the first half before the Blue Devils pulled away.
The schedule didn't get much easier for Miller and the Spartans, who took on a 2011 NCAA Final Four participant in VCU and another NCAA Sweet 16 team in Richmond along with Miami (ACC), East Carolina (Conference USA) to round out their non-league schedule. The Spartans opened Southern Conference play January 5 against league favorite Davidson (which beat Kansas earlier this year).
