|Cubit Gets Hall of Fame Call|
Mark Cubit, Mercersburg’s head boys’ basketball coach for the past 10 seasons, was inducted October 22 into the Delco [Delaware County, Pennsylvania] Athletes Hall of Fame. Cubit starred at Sharon Hill High School, the University of Vermont and Syracuse University, and as a professional player in England.
Cubit’s 2005–2006 Blue Storm team won a school-record 25 games, and finished 25–3 on the season.
As a player, he earned second-team All-State honors as a player at Sharon Hill High, and spent two years at Vermont before transferring to Syracuse, where he played for head coach Jim Boeheim and assistant Rick Pitino. Cubit captained the team and led the Orangemen to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament his senior year; after graduation, he served as an assistant coach for two seasons before playing professionally in England’s National Basketball League, where he averaged 32.6 points per game.
Before coming to Mercersburg, Cubit served as the head coach at nearby Chambersburg High School; his teams made the state quarterfinals twice in a five-year span, including a win over future NBA star Richard Hamilton’s Coatesville squad.
