Roza's Essay Brings Home Award

Entrants were asked to examine what the Abrahamic traditions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) teach us about compassion, and how their founders serve as exemplars of compassion. Entrants were also asked to propose a teen-based project that embodies compassionate principles.
Fund for the Future of our Children is a Washington-based organization that was established in 1993 and is dedicated to nurturing and shaping the youth of today into tomorrow’s leaders for peace.
Roza, of Hagerstown, Maryland, is in his third year at Mercersburg, and is the son of Eli and Susan Roza. He and 16 other finalists were honored during the Georgetown event, which was held in the Riggs Library and featured a keynote speech by Farah Pandith, who serves as special representative to Muslim communities for the U.S. Department of State. Pandith, who reports directly to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is known for her support of youth in efforts toward interfaith understanding.
Mercersburg Regent Andrew Ammerman ’68 is a co-sponsor of the essay contest and a strong supporter of the Fund. Ammerman also serves on Georgetown’s Board of Regents and on the Board of Trustees of Arena Stage in Washington. He endowed Mercersburg’s annual
Ammerman Family Lecture Series with his mother, Josephine, in memory of his father, H. Max Ammerman, and brother, Stephen C. Ammerman. Andrew Ammerman also sponsors the Ammerman Distinguished Teaching Award.
