I would like to bring everybody who is thinking of coming to Mercersburg to my dorm, Fowle Hall. My experience at my dorm is that everybody takes care of each other.
Yesterday was my birthday. I thought everybody had forgotten, though I didn’t tell anyone it was my birthday. I was so sad. Then at night before lights-out, every girl on my wing knocked on my door. They sang “Happy Birthday” and gave me presents. That just made me feel so good and totally at home.
When you’re far away from home, having your friends and teachers right beside you is what I feel makes Mercersburg feel like home, and that’s what makes Mercersburg different.
I’m in the 10th grade. Now that I have been at Mercersburg for six months, I love this school, both socially and academically. I love all the classes. I feel like I can actually put my opinion on the table and share my experiences here.
Last year I knew that I would be going to the United States, but I didn’t know whether I would be attending a boarding school, private school, or a public school. I have a lot of friends who go to boarding schools, who told me a lot of good things about them.
I applied to a lot of schools. I didn’t visit them, I just applied. But in Hanoi, my hometown, I interviewed with someone from Mercersburg. I didn’t expect to actually get accepted to Mercersburg. When I got my acceptance letter last March, I was over the moon!
At first I was a little overwhelmed, because this campus is really big. In Vietnam we don’t have schools like this. I love this campus. In fact, I love everything here. And it has totally matched up with my expectations.
I like the phrase “Define yourself. Here.” I think I’m in the process of doing that right now. I know that in the next two years here I will definitely define myself more and more. The students here are very comfortable with themselves, because they are doing the same thing.
I’m not really a sports person. But since I came to Mercersburg, I saw that it would definitely be a good experience to try a sport. Right now I’m doing the media team, so I’m with the athletic teams a lot. In the future I think I will try squash or maybe tennis.
On the other hand, I love the Burgin arts center. I feel very comfortable being there. Chorale is fun, and the other members are very friendly. This year I also had the chance to take ceramics. I never thought I could actually do a sculpture and make a pot on the wheel. It’s a really good experience.
I am already excited for what is coming next.
