For those students with good grades and a burning passion to study language and culture, School Year Abroad (SYA) can be a great opportunity. If you are interested in learning about SYA, ask a language teacher so you can get a sense of what the year is about. You can also visit www.sya.org.
SYA Application Process, continued
Get an application from a language teacher before Thanksgiving break. This gives us an idea of who is applying, and also which countries are of interest.
Talk to your parents over Thanksgiving Break
Have your teachers complete the recommendations before winter break (ask them well in advance).
Applications are due in the beginning of January.
We interview interested students in the second week of January.
In late January the Mercersburg committee meets to decide on who to recommend to SYA, and informs each candidate of his/her status.
We send the chosen applications to SYA.
SYA decides who is offered admission.
If a candidate is offered admission, SYA then decides on a financial aid offer.
School Year Abroad Mercersburg has participated in the School Year Abroad program, and routinely sends students to the Spain, Italy, France, and China programs. Typically, Mercersburg sends two to four students to SYA in a given year. Check out the application process below.
