1:00 p.m. V Men's Soccer @ Peddie School
Mercersburg and Peddie battled for 80 solid minutes and beyond before settling on a 1-1 overtime tie in exciting Mid Atlantic Prep League action.
The Storm opened the scoring when Bill Flanagan's shot was deflected by the Peddie goalkeeper and Guillerme Souto capitalized on good positioning to drive the ball into the net. The halftime score was 1-0 Mercersburg, but Peddie got on the board in the second half after a poor Mercersburg foul about 24 yards from goal. The Peddie player drove a hard ball at goalkeeper Dillon French, who had played a brilliant game, and he deflected the ball into the net to bring the score to 1-1.
"Peddie was very good on the ball and they were a well trained team. We got tough defensive play from MacArthur Gill, Tad Holzapfel, David Liu, and Matt Timoney, keeping us in the game. The boys should be applauded for playing with fierce intensity and passion in a well fought game against a solid arguably the best squad in the league,"commented coach Quentin McDowell, whose team was without two starters.
Notes: Mercersburg ends MAPL play with a 2-1-2 mark. Peddie extended its league record to 3-0-1 with the tie. The Falcons essentially clinched the league title with the tie, while the Storm must wait for four teams to conclude league play to see its final standing.
