QUESTIONS
What are your favorite books you've read at Mercersburg?
I really liked some of the books we read this year in my English classThe Odyssey and Great Expectations. Henry the IV, Parts I and II were really great. I’d never read any Shakespeare and found it hard to read at first. Some of the themes that we discussed were really interesting. We talked about Henry—and Hal—and how his personality was different around different people. We talked about who Hal really was and whether he knew himself.

Who is your favorite teacher?
The teachers here have been everything I dreamed of. I really like Mr. Hicks. I can talk to him without having to explain myself every two seconds. I can be a little nervous—I don’t crack under pressure, I kind of explode—but his sense of humor helps me relax.

What have you done here that you never thought you'd do?
I tried tech theatre. I never thought I’d be hanging lights. And I’d never even seen a lacrosse stick before I came here. Now I manage JV boys’ lacrosse.

What are your favorite places on campus?
I’ve always likes castles, that kind of grandness. That’s why I like the Edwards Room in Keil Hall. It just feels big and serious and quiet. The Chapel is a beautiful building, too—a great place to go when I want to be alone. Backcampus is a great place to walk or run, either alone or with friends. And the library is a great place to read, write, and work, with a nice view of the Chapel.

What’s it like to live in the dorms at Mercersburg?
Dorm life can be smelly and loud, but there’s always something going on. You’re never bored. I really like my roommate—she’s outgoing and energetic and a little more impulsive than I am. I keep us sane, and she gets us to have some fun.

What was a class you're glad you took but never want to take again?
AP French. I learned a lot about grammar and structure, but I often felt out of place being the only freshman. Also, being a native speaker, I felt as if I had an unfair advantage over the other students.

What's been your proudest moment at Mercersburg?

My proudest moment was being elected President of Mercersburg’s Class of '10.

What's been your most embarrassing moment at Mercersburg?
I was in front of Tippetts, and I was waving to some girls coming out of the dining hall. I had eaten a bit too much sugar, and I was feeling hyper, so I did this weird little jumping up in the air and flailing my arms deal. That was ridiculous enough in itself (although not unusual), but I managed to trip on my own two feet, and I found myself flat on my face.

If you could offer one piece of advice to an incoming student, what would it be?
Meet all the people you can in the first month.
