DEFINITION Grant (verb): to put more life in your years than years in your life.
QUESTIONSWhat were you most looking forward to about coming to Mercersburg?I wanted a little independence from my parents. They push me a lot. For example, they are always on me about doing homework. I wanted to see if I could do it on my own.
What has been the biggest surprise? When I first started freshman year, I didn't want to be here. I wanted to be at home with my friends. My grades were bad. In fact, I was placed on academic warning. My parents helped me though this, of course. But even more, it was my adviser. He's a great guy and he pushed me along. Actually a lot of people at Mercersburg
helped me. And I turned it around. By the end of the year, I was on the honor roll, I loved it, and I wanted to stay.
What's one of the most fun things you've done?My sophomore year I was on the
JV lacrosse team and we played Chambersburg, a big rival. It was pouring rain and we beat them 4-0. Even though I had just started playing lacrosse, I scored two of the goals. It was really exciting.
How does being an athlete make you a better student?I think it makes you realize that you have to organize yourself more and it helps you with your schedule. At Mercersburg, you don't have much free time, especially if you're on a varsity team. For example, you travel a lot on weekends. So you're pushed that extra little bit and it forces you to get everything done.
What have been your favorite classes?Latin (which I have taken the past three years at Mercersburg,) was my favorite because of Mr. Thorne.
Math was another favorite because it is unquestionably my best subject and Mr. Grady is a great teacher. English 30 is another favorite because it was the first
English class I ever liked.
What class are you glad you took but never want to take again?Probably computer art, which is extremely fun, but drawing with a computer mouse and trying to make a masterpiece is very hard. I had never really taken a computer art class and I guess I could say I liked it but it was challenging.
What are your favorite places on campus?Fowle Hall, because it’s been my home the past three years and will be for the my last year. And I like the
Burgin Center. It’s just so new and good looking and I can play my guitar in it without people complaining of the noise. Also
the Chapel. I just can't explain the intricate work that had to go in to making that structure. It’s a place to rest and get a peace of mind.
What’s been your proudest moment? When i brought an academic-warning average up to an honors average in one school year.
What advice would you give to an incoming student?Try out anything that you have as an interest. And don’t worry if you become a little homesick. Before you know it, this place will feel like home.
