At Mercersburg, students find remarkable opportunities to express their theatrical talents—onstage as well as behind the scenes.

Each year, the Academy presents two major theatrical productions, two studio productions, a festival of student-directed one-act plays, and an afternoon of scenes from Shakespeare and other classical works. Each production gives students hands-on experience in everything from acting to lighting, stage management, set construction, and more. Theatre productions are directed by Laurie Mufson, Director of Theatre, as well as other faculty members.

Theatre performances are staged by Mercersburg's student theatre company, Stony Batter. Founded in 1894, the club is the oldest continually active student group on campus and has a powerful tradition. Academy Award winner
Jimmy Stewart, Class of ’28, participated in Mercersburg theatre.
