Mercersburg’s curriculum offers students the opportunity to explore ideas through discussions, lectures, tutorials, and broad exposure to the liberal arts.

The school offers 156 courses from its eight academic departments. In almost all areas of the curriculum, qualified students are able to enroll in any of the 41 AP, post-AP, and Honors courses.

Students may also create their own course with an independent or directed study in a special area of interest. All seniors conclude their Mercersburg studies with an original senior project.

With a variety of courses from which to choose, students may complete graduation requirements with courses that interest and challenge them.

Course Selection
Course selection is an exciting time of the year because students get to plan (or revise their plan) for how to get to graduation day. Students select their courses with the help of several faculty members:
  • Current teacher: a student’s teacher recommends classes for the following year based on how the student performed in their course.
  • Department head: The head of each academic department reviews the courses that teachers recommended and helps students decide which course to take if they cannot decide.
  • Registration team members: The faculty members of the registration team (department heads, college counselors, academic dean, registrar) have one-on-one course selection meetings with students. In these meetings, students communicate their academic goals to faculty members who are the most knowledgeable about the curriculum. These faculty members help the students to plan their courses based on their goals and interests.
  • Adviser: Each student’s adviser also helps in the course selection process. The adviser ensures that the advisee has created an academic program that allows time for other important aspects of school life to be pursued.
