Faculty members Derry Mason, Pete Gunkelman,  and John Hutchins lead students on an expedition into the Andes. There, they will share photos and “you are here” commentary via satellite. Enjoy their view from up to 20,000 feet.

A group of Mercersburg faculty and students planned to land in Lima on June 16 and go directly to the town of Huaraz, at about 10,000 feet.  In Huaraz, they prepared to head into the mountains and head into the Ishinca Valley, which is in the Cordillera Blanca portion of the Andes mountains.  In the Ishinca Valley, the expedition planned to establish a base camp at 14,000 feet and from there stage attempts on peaks Urus, Ishinca, and Tocclaraju.  The tallest peak the group will attempt is 20,000 feet.  “There is a long tradition of mountaineering in the region and our students will come into contact with climbing teams from around the world,” Hutchins says.
