Baseball Downs Malvern Prep, Advances to Final Four

Mercersburg knocked off host Malvern Prep 9–4 May 24 in a matchup of the past two Pennsylvania State Independent School baseball champions.
The victory advances the Blue Storm (15–11) to the state semifinals Saturday, May 26, at Upper Perkiomen High School against Germantown Academy (22–5). First pitch is at noon. The winner faces the survivor of the other semifinal between Chestnut Hill Academy and the Haverford School in the championship game at 4 p.m. at nearby Perkiomen School.
Mercersburg is seeking its second state championship in three seasons, and its fourth in nine years (the Blue Storm captured titles in 1999, 2002, and 2005).
Against Malvern Prep, the defending state champion, the Storm pounded out 15 hits. Dusty French ’07, Kenny Burns ’07, Cord Heine ’07, Ryan Colby ’07, and Tom Timoney ’09 led the way offensively, and Drew Crofton ’07, Colby, and Dave O'Brien ’08 shut down the No. 2-seeded Friars on their home field.
Upper Perkiomen High School and Perkiomen School are located in Pennsburg, Montgomery County (northwest of Philadelphia).
