Walker Publishes on Sports Injuries

Science department faculty member Nikki Walker published, "Low-intensity Pulsed Ultrasound and Pulsed Electromagnetic Field in the Treatment of Tibial Fractures," in the December issue of T
he Journal of Athletic Training: the Official Publication of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association. The journal, a quarterly publication, is read by athletic trainers, physical therapists, and sports medicine professionals.
"Basically, I wanted to see if ultrasound devices were able to speed up the healing of shinbone fractures and my research concluded that, yes, they do,” said Walker, a biology teacher and women’s softball coach at Mercersburg.
Walker, who holds a master's degree in science and is a certified athletic trainer, began her research in 2004, while working toward a doctorate in exercise science. “I was thrilled when I found out I was going to be published in such a well-respected publication,” she said.
